We will remember our 3 day stay as a visit to what is certainly one of the finest B&B's we could imagine. Richard is a fantastic and highly personable host and has built a world class retreat that is so comfortable is feels like a home away from home. The rooms are spacious, inviting, and have panoramic private forest and valley views. Richard ambitiously prepares a hearty and delicious breakfast each morning for all of his guests. I cannot imagine anybody being disappointed in the Stone Store Lodge. If anything, the reviews here are being conservative.

"Great location - wonderful views.  We found the location to be excellent with the rooms looking toward the Kerikeri inlet. IT WAS our first day in New Zealand. Having flown 10 hours to Auckland and another hour from Auckland to the Bay of Islands, you can imagine our road weariness. But the little town of Keri Keri was charming enough to make us forget being tired.
First of all, we were greeted with a dazzling rainbow fully arched across the horizon just as we drove out of the airport. This would be one of very many we would see in our trek across the North Island, but this first one just seemed brighter, more cheery… and gave hope and promise like the Biblical covenant.
We were going to stay at Stone Store Lodge, a lovely custom bed and breakfast establishment built by former dairy farmer Richard Miller. Richard decided to sell his animals and farm in a life-changing decision and later took off in his yacht to the Polynesian islands before settling back on land.
The site he chose was also where the first European settlers came aboard all those years ago at Stone Store Basin and, quite appropriately, his house overlooks the original landing place where the pioneers arrived.

Apart from being an admirable host, Richard is also an accomplished cook. His hot breakfasts each morning pepped us up and sent us out energised for our daily forays. His vegetables come mostly from a garden that he co-farms with friends, just as persimmons, sweet and fresh, are given by friends. As far as possible, all his ingredients are organic.
On our last evening, we were treated to a pizza party, where we also met a few of Richard’s friends and his youngest son, who was in charge of baking the pizzas in the stone oven in the garden. I persuaded Richard to part with his pizza dough recipe because it was one of the tastiest home-made versions I had experienced. It’s simple, and you can just add toppings of your choice. I opted for a totally vegetarian pizza and enjoyed it without ever missing a beat, or meat for that matter.

Recipe by Richard Miller
Ingredients (serves 4 to 6):
3 cups high grade white flour
1 cup stone ground whole meal flour
1/3 cup yogurt
1/3 cup olive oil
2 tbsp yeast
2 tbsp sugar
1 ½ cups warm water

1. Mix sugar, warm water and yeast and let bubble.
2. Add oil, yogurt and salt and mix with the flour. Allow to sit and rise then knead adding flour or warm water if need be.
3. Break off mandarin orange sized balls and allow to prove.
4. Roll out onto thin crust dinner plate size bases.
5. Add topping of choice. (Tomatoes, fresh rocket leaves, grilled peppers, goat’s cheese, mushrooms, olives etc).
6. Bake in a hot oven for 5 to 8 minutes until crisp and cooked. Or pop it into your own backyard oven pizza if you have one!

Richard’s pizza base is light and crisp and is best rolled out really thin. It still retains a little chewiness and goes well with lighter vegetable toppings. Add goat’s cheese and mozzarella or crushed canned tomatoes for easy sauces and toppings.

For Many people, the words ‘bed and breakfast’ suggest an overnight stay in a stranger’s home where comfort and privacy are sacrificed in the interests of economy. But Kerikeri home stay owner Richard Miller promises guests at his year-old Stone Store Lodge overlooking the town’s historic basin both luxury and privacy.

Each of the three suites boast under floor heating, soundproofed walls, air conditioning, entertainment facilities, wireless internet access and private bathroom and deck.
Meanwhile, spacious indoor and outdoor living areas allow guests to find solitude even in the lodge’s communal areas.

It’s no wonder Auckland magazine ‘Metro’ recommended Stone Store Lodge to its readers, describing the rooms as ‘svelte’, while ‘North and South’ magazine called the lodge ‘classy’.
Mr Miller says he wanted to create a home stay where guests could comfortably spend time in their suites without feeling claustro-phobic.

He also wanted the lodge to have a contemporary, minimalist look and achieved this by using concrete and timber flooring instead of carpet in the living areas.
White walls complement the effect, while floor-to ceiling windows and doors opening on to courtyards, gardens and decks add to the sense of space.

If the visitor book is any-thing to go by, guests love what Richard and Russell architect Christine Hall have achieved on the 1-hectare site.

The book is crammed with compliments about the views and the lodge’s sanctuary-like ambience.
